What We Do

by Stephen Browne last modified 04/02/2008 12:13

FEG Consulting has worked to meet the needs of donors and practitioners at all levels through multiple facilitation and capacity-building activities, the development and application of tools for collecting and analyzing livelihoods information, and the design of targeted information products to support decision-makers. Our core areas of expertise fall under three main headings: livelihoods, policies and processes.

Understanding livelihoods – that is, how households operate to get the basic things they need to survive and prosper – is an essential requirement for effective emergency and development planning. For the last ten years, FEG Consulting (formerly known as the Food Economy Group) has been a leader in the field of livelihoods analysis, pioneering the Household Economy Approach and its use as an analytical framework to assess emergency needs; provide famine early warning; and design and evaluate livelihoods-based development projects.

FEG Consulting provides policy advising on two levels: 1. by providing information and analysis on how humanitarian and development policies affect or will affect the lives and livelihoods of beneficiary communities; and 2. by helping clients design policies that best meet the needs of beneficiaries, and at the same time make sense for the implementing agency or institution.

Select FEG core staff have also developed skills in building consensus and helping difficult processes advance.

Facilitating these complex processes involves a nuanced understanding of stakeholders' long and short term development goals, the mechanisms used to implement and achieve their goals and the dynamics between host country government institutions, bi-lateral donors and partner agencies. FEG Consulting has extensive experience in strengthening host government and donor relations and building consensus among diverse stakeholders to meet common policy and program objectives.
