FEG training initiatives
Below are a few examples of FEG training initiatives:
2007
• Trained and led multi-institutional teams on HEA livelihoods assessments for development planning in four areas of Northeast Kenya as part of a Europe Commission Humanitarian Office development initiative in August - September 2007.
• Trained Oxfam staff from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the Phillippines and Oxford on HEA assessments in the region.

• Trained and led teams on baseline food economy assessments in the pastoral Somali areas of Ethiopia as part of Save the Children UK's famine early warning system in Region 5 in October 2001 - February 2002
• Provided technical support to the initial set-up of the WFP Technical Support Unit (TSU) in Sierra Leone , followed by food economy field training for TSU staff (May and June 2001), and the implementation of a national food security assessment in November-December 2001.
• In November 2001, trained project staff from REST and Oxfam-Canada in the food economy method, and updated their baseline information in Kolla Tembien Woreda (Tigray, Ethiopia ). Developed tools for monitoring the impact of project activities on the household food economy.
• Conducted a two-phase training for staff of the FAO Food Security Assessment Unit (FSAU) for Somalia in the use of the food economy spreadsheet as a tool to analyse food security (January and August 2001).
• Conducted a field-based two-week training programme in food economy for West African representatives of the USAID Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS-Net) in Mauritania in April 2001.
• Conducted a field-based end-to-end training in household food economy analysis for regional representatives of FEWS-Net in Southern Africa in April-May 2001.
• Conducted a field-based end-to-end training in household food economy analysis for regional representatives of FEWS-Net in Eastern Africa in March 2001.
• Undertook baseline food economy assessment together with local staff capacity building in Eritrea as part of F.E.G's long-term contract to support vulnerability assessment in USAID FEWS-NET, in February 2001.
2000
• Supported Save the Children UK assessment of impact of conflict in southern Uganda in August 2000 - trained staff from government, NGOs and the UN.
• Conducted a two-day workshop in May 2000 for World Vision in the UK: General Introduction to Food Security and Food Economy.
1999
• Designed and conducted short training course on food security assessment at British Council, Manchester UK for DFID in December 1999.
• Led a 3-month food economy training and assessment exercise in six areas of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo for SCF-UK and local partner organizations in September-December 1999, to inform current and longer-term food security interventions for displaced and host populations.
• Trained and led teams in Arusha and Singida Regions, Tanzania in May - July 1999, to determine current year needs for food assistance and to inform future development and disaster prevention strategies, as part of a joint initiative among the Government of Tanzania's Prime Minister's Office, Save the Children Fund UK, and the World Food Programme.
1998
• Conducted food economy assessments, combined with training, for WFP in southern Sudan as part of the 1998 Annual Needs Assessment, in October - December 1998.
