Interpretation of Information
Information about a given area or community can only be properly interpreted if it is put into context with how people live.
Conservation project impact assessment provides an example of the value of livelihoods-based analysis. This is because it has been found that: an analysis of local livelihoods is essential for a proper understanding of the impact of interventions– at household level. In an effort to conserve a habitat or species conservation interventions, may, for example, leave one group of households destitute because the of restrictions to typical income generating activities they engage in. For example, if a conservation intervention calls for a ban on wildlife hunting or trade it is important to understand how it will impact the income of households who normally rely on these activities. Additionally, to ensure the project’s lasting success it must consider alternate sources of income to compensate for the resulting income deficit. Too often project fail to realize the indirect impact of project on livelihoods at the household level.
