FEWS NET

Chemonics International has been responsible for the management of the FEWS NET program since 2000. Since that time too, FEG has been leading the vulnerability and livelihood assessment work, and has put livelihoods analysis methodology at the core of FEWS NET’s assessment processes, integrating the use of original field data into information products designed to support decision-makers at all levels. As of 2007 FEWS NET has:

  • Expanded country coverage in Africa and globally while maintaining high quality early warning information reporting and analysis
  • Improved understanding of food access and integrated it into monitoring, reporting, and information products
  • Improved how hazards are monitored, analyzed, and integrated into early warning and food security analyzes
  • Increased the utility of FEWS NET to international donors, FEWS NET presence country governments, and other food security and early warning stakeholder end-users through targeted services and information products delivery
  • Increased contributions to contingency response planning of international donors and in the field, particularly in Ethiopia
  • Strengthened capacity of early warning partners and networks
  • Introduced new areas of FEWS NET monitoring, e.g. cross border trade, conflict, and the impact of HIV/AIDS on households

FEG work with FEWS NET has had a major impact in integrating the practical use of livelihoods analysis into national and regional level early warning of FEWS NET presence countries, and has led to significant experience building the capacity of early warning actors, national government staffs, and international donor agency partners in conducting improved vulnerability analysis.

FEWS NET

For more than 20 years, FEWS NET – the USAID-commissioned Famine Early Warning Systems Network – has provided information and analysis on hunger threats and responses in Africa and beyond, with offices in more then 20 countries.  As its name implies, FEWS NET networks with numerous partners at the national level, including government early warning systems.
