In response to rising concern about the effects of rising global food prices on rural households, FEG Consulting has provided an alternative view to the urban-centric focus to date, arguing that direct aid responses to this crisis must be especially precise (given limited aid resources) and grounded in the principle of ‘proportionality to need’, regardless of whether the areas at risk are rural or urban.

In 2008 FEG Consulting and Save the Children -UK, with support from the DFID-funded RHVP, released a toolkit that aims to provide updated technical and training materials related to the Household Economy Approach (HEA), replacing previous guidance on HEA released in 2000. The Practitioners' Guide is the first component of this toolkit, and offers technical support to consultants, field staff and program planners on all aspects of the HEA Framework.

In late summer 2007, FEG Consulting supported Save the Children UK in leading an HEA baseline assessment, jointly carried out with CARE, Oxfam GB, ACF, Islamic Relief and Merlin in northeastern Kenya. Key among the findings was that despite almost continuous emergency support in North Eastern Kenya since the drought of 1997-98, poverty has increased in the region.

As of June 2008, FEWS NET and FEG Consulting, in collaboration with the Mozambique Vulnerability Assessment Committee and other FEWS NET Mozambique partners have been undertaking an HEA livelihoods baseline assessment in the Zambezi Valley and in select coastal districts of Nampula and Zambezi Provinces.
